Tallahassee Police Department Celebrates 200 Years of Service to the Community

The Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) proudly marks its bicentennial, commemorating 200 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Tallahassee. Established in 1826, the department has grown alongside the City, remaining grounded in a long-standing commitment to public safety.

Throughout its history, TPD has continuously adapted to meet the needs of a changing community while maintaining the core values that define the profession. Generations of officers and professional staff have contributed to a legacy built on trust, loyalty, and commitment, principles that continue to guide the department today.

A hallmark of that commitment is TPD's long-standing dedication to professional standards and accountability. The Tallahassee Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1986 and is tied for the longest continuously accredited law enforcement agency in the nation. In addition, TPD has maintained accreditation through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) since 2002. These distinctions reflect decades of adherence to nationally and state-recognized best practices in policing.

"Reaching 200 years of service is a powerful reminder of the responsibility we carry and the trust our community has placed in this Department for generations," said Chief Lawrence Revell.  Revell went on to say, "As we honor our past, we remain focused on serving Tallahassee with integrity today, while continuing to lead the department and law enforcement into the future."

Today, TPD continues to build upon this foundation by embracing modern policing strategies, advanced training, and innovative technology, while strengthening partnerships with the community it serves. The department remains focused on transparency, fairness, and proactive engagement as it works to address both present-day challenges and future needs.

As Tallahassee looks ahead, so does its Police Department. This bicentennial is not only a moment to reflect on 200 years of service, but also an opportunity to reaffirm TPD's enduring commitment to being Here for You.
